Japan's government says the next unit of peacekeepers it sends to South Sudan will be allowed to take part in armed rescues. It is the first time Self-Defense Force personnel will be permitted to help UN staff or NGO workers who come under attack.
Cabinet members made the decision at a meeting on Tuesday. The government says the situation in South Sudan meets Japan's criteria for sending peacekeepers.
And new national security legislation that came into effect earlier this year allows for armed rescue missions in very limited cases. Those cases now include when people related to the UN come under attack.
A Ground Self-Defense Force engineering unit is due to head to South Sudan in the next few weeks. It will begin work in and around the capital, Juba, in mid-December.
