今日のテキスト TALKS HIGHLIGHT DIFFERENCES

Representatives of the United States and China have started high-level talks, but it's clear that both sides expect different results. American leaders are demanding the Chinese to act responsibly, while the Chinese urged U.S. officials to respect their sovereignty and territory.
The two-day Strategic and Economic Dialogue opened in Beijing, with Secretary of State John Kerry and Treasury Secretary Jack Lew heading the U.S. delegation.
In the opening speech, Chinese President Xi Jinping said the Pacific Ocean has ample space to accommodate the two great nations. He said the two sides should strengthen trust through dialogue and seek to build a new model of superpower relations.

(Xi Jinping / Chinese President)
"We should treat each other equally and with mutual respect, and respect each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and respect the path of development each chooses."

(John Kerry / U.S. Secretary of State)
"We welcome the emergence of a peaceful, stable, prosperous China that contributes to the stability and the development of the region and that chooses to play a responsible role in world affairs."

Kerry said a new model of relations is not defined in words but in actions.
