Ayumu Goromaru is at the pinnacle of his popularity after delivering an outstanding performance in the 2015 World Cup. He also became known for the trademark pose he strikes before a kick.
One quirky result is that a statue in central Japan that has its hands clasped in a similar way is seeing more visitors. Members of a local high school rugby team visited the Buddha to pray for victory in a national tournament.
The term "Goromaru Pose" has even been nominated for the Japanese word of the year award.

The Buddha began drawing more attention after the temple's chief priest posted a photo of the statue on Facebook.
