People in the Philippines will soon be able to watch a popular NHK TV drama series in their local language.
Commercial broadcasting network TV5 will start airing the 2013 season of "Amachan" from October. It will be dubbed in Tagalog.
"Amachan" is the story of a high school girl named Aki who becomes an "ama" diver in her mother's hometown in northeastern Japan. She dives for marine products like sea urchins. She later becomes a member of a pop music group.
Rena Nounen plays the starring role of Aki. She sent a video message in Tagalog to a news conference in Manila. Nounen says she hopes people in the Philippines will enjoy the series.
The series has been aired in 10 countries and regions. It was subtitled in local languages. More people in the Philippines are becoming fans of Japanese pop culture such as anime and manga. NHK officials say they hope "Amachan" will help deepen their understanding of Japan.
