今日のテキスト COUNTING AMUR TIGERS

Russian officials have begun a comprehensive survey of Amur tigers in the country's Far East region. The large cats are on the edge of extinction.
Amur tigers live in forests in the Russian Far East and along the Amur River. The animal can be as long as three meters.
A survey 10 years ago established that there were between 420 and a little over 500 in existence. The Russian government and groups led by the World Wide Fund for Nature will conduct the new study. A team of researchers tracked footprints on the outskirts of Vladivostok to find the gender and age of the tigers.

"Amur tigers are precious and irreplaceable animals for Russia. We have to protect them by all means."

The results of the survey are due in May and will help form measures to protect the species. Officials plan to step up patrols in the wilderness and set up nature reserves
