Japanese government officials have fresh ideas about fresh vegetables. They're looking at allowing farmers to include information about the health benefits of their produce on labels. Managers at major trading firms see this as a marketing opportunity.
The people at Mitsui & Co. have joined hands with a venture firm in northern Japan to develop a special type of onion. It contains large amounts of a substance that can help control the level of blood sugar. One onion will cost about four times as much as a regular onion. Mitsui officials say they're targeting health-conscious consumers in major cities.

"We'll first try to establish a brand image in Japan for the onion as a nutritious vegetable. Then we hope to promote it in international markets, using our network."

And the people at Itochu Corporation have started selling fortified cherry tomatoes. They're rich in a substance that's said to be good for the skin.
