今日のテキスト AMED COLUMBUS SHIP 'FOUND'

An American explorer says he has found the wreck of the flagship of Christopher Columbus. Barry Clifford claims to have discovered the Santa Maria off the coast of Haiti. He says he based his conclusions on things he read in Columbus' diary.

"And understanding the Diario is what enabled us to find what we have good reason to believe is the Santa Maria."

Clifford said the wreck lies about eight kilometers off the coast, in about four meters of water. The Santa Maria was one of three ships that sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492. It ran aground off what is now Haiti.
Clifford and his team first discovered the wreck in 2003, but they couldn't identify the ship. He says he learned in the diary that it may be the Santa Maria.
Clifford says large stones at the site may have been used to stabilize the ship. A cylindrical object could be a 15th century cannon. He says he'll keep researching to confirm his findings.
