Climate scientists are warning that weather extremes of today will only become worse unless drastic steps are taken.
Some 300 scientists and authors behind the National Climate Assessment report say the changing climate will bring heavier rains, more powerful storms and bigger wildfires.
President Obama is pushing for more solar and wind power and stricter rules for existing power plants.

"The good news is that we've already taken some big actions, whether it's increasing fuel efficiency standards on cars, increasing efficiency on appliances. But we're going to have to do more. We also have a chance to turn back these rising temperatures if we take some bold actions now."

Some critics are calling the report "alarmist" and justification for government overreach, and some dissenting climate scientists are pointing out contradictions in the report itself.
