Government officials in Japan are saying they don't regard Bitcoin as a currency, but they say transactions could still be subject to tax.
Now, Cabinet members approved a statement that explains how to treat Bitcoin under the law. It says banks can't handle Bitcoin transactions or use the virtual currency to open accounts. It also says financial authorities should not treat Bitcoin as securities, but the statement says the government can tax gains from trades.
Government officials did not explain what kind of regulations they can impose on the virtual currency.

(Yoshihide Suga / Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary)
"We are still in the middle of gathering information on Bitcoin and examining its position under the current laws. We're continuing to monitor developments and will act promptly if needed."

Many people have been calling for regulations on Bitcoin following the collapse of the Tokyo-based exchange MtGox last week.
