The new head of the U.S. central bank has painted a picture of continuity at the Federal Reserve. Janet Yellen delivered her first testimony before Congress as Fed chair. She says she and her colleagues will maintain their current monetary policy.

"I expect a great deal of continuity in the FOMC's approach to monetary policy. I served on the committee as we formulated our current policy strategy, and I strongly support that strategy."

Policymakers decided during meetings in December and January to scale back their monthly purchases of bonds, and Yellen said they would take further steps to reduce the stimulus if the economy keeps improving. Yellen will chair her first meeting of policymakers when they meet again next month.
