Incumbent Mayor Susumu Inamine of Okinawa's Nago City won reelection on Sunday. He strongly opposes moving a controversial U.S. military base to his city.
The 68-year-old Inamine and his supporters gathered to celebrate the victory. Inamine won about 19,800 votes to his rival's about 15,600. Inamine vowed during his campaign that he would not allow any new U.S. military facilities to be built in his city.

"I will refuse any talks if reclaiming our land for the base is a precondition, because I am responsible for keeping and protecting the city's properties and guarding our citizens' safety."

His challenger, Bunshin Suematsu, was backed by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling party. He campaigned in favor of hosting the U.S. base. Government officials from Japan and the United States have already agreed on the relocation. They want to move the U.S. Futenma Air Station from Ginowan City to Nago.
