Egypt's election commission says more than 98 percent of the voters who took part in this month's referendum approved a draft constitution for the country. The military ousted President Mohamed Morsi and suspended an earlier draft in July of last year.
The commission announced the results of the two-day referendum on Saturday. Voter turnout was about 39 percent, about six percent higher than that for a referendum on the earlier draft under then President Morsi in 2012. The Muslim Brotherhood, Morsi's power base, boycotted the vote.
The new document bans political parties based on religion and gives greater powers to the military. It allows civilians to be tried in military courts if they harm the armed forces. Young members of pro-democracy groups in Egypt are concerned about the military's increasing influence.
The military-backed interim government is expected to portray the approval of the new constitution as proof of its legitimacy to govern. It is likely to press on with a presidential election.
