Rescuers on board a Chinese helicopter have finished picking up passengers from an ice-locked ship in the Antarctic Ocean. The Russian research vessel has been stranded for more than a week.
It became trapped on December 24th during its voyage from New Zealand. Seventy-four researchers, tourists and crewmembers were on board.
The Chinese help came after icebreakers sent by the Australian maritime safety authorities failed to reach the ship because of strong winds and heavy snow. The helicopter arrived on Thursday from a Chinese icebreaker after weather conditions stabilized. The aircraft picked up all 52 researchers and tourists and transferred them to an Australian icebreaker.
Twenty-two crewmembers will stay on the research ship until the ice thins so they can leave the area on their own.
